F.A.Q.

This post is a list of questions that often come up in conversation with prospective clients, current clients, or more broadly in relation to my line of work. I hope you find my opinions helpful. You can also check out my post on resources here.

How did you get started in grant writing?

I was inducted into the world of writing and managing grants during my first job after graduate school! You can read more about my experience in Mayor Bloomberg’s office working on criminal justice grants here.

Can you fundraise for organizations based outside of the United States?

While I am extremely appreciative of the valuable work happening on behalf of the world’s most pressing issues across the globe, my fundraising efforts are focused on organizations based in the U.S.

How much time does it take to write a government grant?

The answer to this one depends on so many variables, including requirements from the funding agency, number of organizations (partners) involved in applying for the grant, and whether or not the program for which you’re seeking funding is still under development. Preparing a large state or federal grant proposal is a team effort and can take anywhere from 40 - 100+ hours.

Can we use grants to cover all of our fundraising needs?

Grant funds should be used to supplement either earned revenue or a strong individual donor base. While grants can certainly be awarded for general operating support, they are almost always intended to fund specific programs or projects that enhance an organization’s core offerings or explore new pathways to fulfilling the mission. Relying on grants alone to pay salaries and keep the lights on is an ill-advised strategy.

Will you waive your fee if we offer to pay you a percentage of any grants you write and win?

No. I do not consider this an ethical approach, and it is never part of any bid or proposal I formulate for prospective clients.

Can you help me find funding if my organization is not a 501c3?

I have experience writing contract bids and procurement proposals for for-profit groups, but my specialty is fundraising for nonprofit organizations. It has been my experience that finding non-dilutive funds for companies looking to make a profit is extremely challenging, and it’s not something I specialize in. I am able to add value if you have identified a funding opportunity for your social enterprise or newly-launched corporation and need support in putting together a proposal or procurement package. I find the process extremely similar to preparing a grant application.
